"René Martin Cabinetmaker By Charlotte Perriand Bench Méribel Arolle 1948"
René Martin, a cabinetmaker from the village of Méribel les Allues, worked very well with Charlotte Perriand to create furniture for hotels such as the Doron. At a very young age, the son of the mountain pastures, René Martin had a fairly raw and natural approach to wood that suited Charlotte perfectly, who always preferred a love of wood and work to an aspect of decorative fascination as we see today. I was able to meet this old gentleman in 2000 and his approach and simplicity touched me a lot. The bench is made of Swiss stone pine, an alpine conifer that grows very slowly at altitude. A very minimalist piece of mountain landscape.
