"Large Porcelain And Gilt Bronze Cup In The Sèvres Style"
Exceptional porcelain cup in the Sevres style of circular shape set in a gilt bronze mount. The cup in a so-called "celestial blue" is decorated with two oval medallions: the first presents a gallant scene decoration; a couple of young shepherds in a bucolic setting; the second presents a bouquet of flowers. These two medallions are framed with rocaille motifs painted in gold. Inside, a floral frieze composed of cornflowers and roses stands out at the neck, in the center of the cup, a sumptuous floral composition is painted. The gilt bronze mount is finely chiseled. The base is decorated with a farandole of three fauns decorated with vine branches supporting the cup. The neck is enhanced with openwork bronze representing interlacing and other rocaille motifs. Two handles in the shape of scrolls complete this composition. This cup is characteristic of the style of the Second Empire which has the will to renew the decorative arts. The aristocracy and the upper middle class will encourage artists to draw inspiration from the styles of the past. This cup is then inspired by the Louis XVI style by its decorative vocabulary, a style brought back into fashion by the Empress Eugenie. Thus, this cup is inspired by the potpourris placed on the front of the fireplaces in the noble apartments. Work from the second half of the 19th century. Napoleon III.
