Lovely 19th century Aubusson wool and silk tapestry depicting a picking scene. A gallant young man, from the top of his ladder, picks and drops cherries that the young woman he is probably courting is collecting by lifting her dress. The scene is surrounded by a decorative border displaying garlands of flowers of various and colorful species. - Symbol of happiness and love but also of the sweetness of paradise, the cherry is also more bawdy. In the countryside, a branch of a cherry tree in bloom was placed on the threshold of the house of girls who were reputed to be not very shy. Appreciated by the court, they were planted in France from the 16th century. King Louis XV in particular was known to appreciate their red and sweet flesh.
