"Morgat Beach"
Gouache on paper,
Signed lower right with marine anchor (marine painter),
Titled lower left: "Morgat - La Plage",
Beautiful, finely crafted work by the painter from Camaret-sur-Mer, Jim Sévellec, pseudonym of Eugène Sévellec, which depicts a view of Morgat Beach, a famous seaside resort in Crozon, nestled at the far end of Douarnenez Bay.
We can make out the many silhouettes of people enjoying the beach as well as the Hôtel de la Plage.
Under the influence of the writer Saint-Pol-Roux, Jim Sevellec went to Paris to pursue artistic training with Louis Marie Désiré-Lucas.
Mobilized in 1916 in the infantry and as an interpreter for American and Scottish soldiers during the First World War, it was his companions who gave him the first name "Jim" easier to pronounce than that of Eugène.
A painter but also a ceramist, he collaborated from 1928 with the Henriot factory, a pottery in Quimper.
In 1936, he was appointed painter of the Navy.
In 2023, an exhibition "Brest in the footsteps of Jim-E Sévellec" honors the artist at the François Mitterrand Media Library - Les Capucins in Brest.
Dimensions: 21 x 34 cm when viewed from the drawing and 30.5 x 41.5 cm with its silvered wooden frame.
