Beautiful and large work by the painter Amédée Julien Marcel-Clément which represents a view of the bay of Saint-Trojan-les-Bains animated by sailboats.
This painting is characterized by vibrant touches, by plays of contrasts and lighting effects allowing to accurately transcribe the atmosphere of the landscape. By his framing, the artist invites us to project ourselves and to discover the beauty of the Breton and Norman shores.
Indeed, the foreground offers us a view of the sea barely veiled by the tops of the maritime pines.
In the background, the artist depicts the many sailboats sailing at sea and above all offers us a spectacular mastery of light and the reflections of gold and silver on the water.

Although he lived his entire life in Paris, Marcel-Clément only painted a few views of his hometown. Indeed, the majority of his works represent the coasts of Brittany, particularly in Dinard where he had a second home.
Amédée Julien Marcel-Clément exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1903 and at the Salon des Indépendants.
Between 1913 and 1914, he presented his works in England, at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool, and at the Royal Scottish Academy. His seascapes made his reputation and demonstrate his talent for the light effects so particular to the Brittany region.

This light, which emanates from the sky, comes to rest in a thousand reflections on the sea, creating a very realistic and sometimes even dramatic atmosphere. The artist uses a wide variety of grays and blues, which he skillfully intersperses with whites and creams, to evoke the shimmering texture of the sky and water.
Marcel-Clément also likes to play with contrasts, thus opposing a firm touch and dark values to a more fluid atmosphere and luminous reflections. Using simplified shapes and almost abstract surfaces, he manages to evoke the sails of boats with surprising realism.
Furthermore, the point of view chosen by the artist always invites the viewer to project himself into the scene.

However, the painter never gives in to the easy way out and strives to render with the greatest care the atmosphere of his subject, which he is able to capture with very few means and a relatively simple palette. The whole gives the composition a very stylized result, skillfully studied and often inspired by Japan.

Dimensions: 50 x 81 cm without frame and 76 x 107 cm with its original cream-coloured Montparnasse frame.
