"Autographed Dedication To A Felibre By Frédéric Mistral On His Portrait. "
Beautiful engraving by Hebert, representing Frédéric Mistral, and bearing a dedication to a friend Félibrige ,Marius Bertrand. Frédéric Mistral (1830-1914) devoted his life to the defense of Provençal culture and language, which he felt was disappearing with the modern world, while it had brought the highest culture to the troubled times of the Middle Ages. It was then the language of the troubadours. He wrote the Trésor dou Felibrige a dictionary in which he sought to prevent the forgetting of a rich vocabulary. He received the Nobel Prize in 1904 for Mirehio (Mireille), which was translated into many languages, and was even set to music by Bizet. Marius Bertrand (1838-1906), is a writer of the Provençal language, active within the Felibriges movement, of which he was a majoral. It is a very nice document from the time when Provençal culture tried to survive, in the face of Republican injunctions for standardization.
