Cherry Blossom
Oil on canvas
H. 46 cm; W. 55 cm
Provenance: Artist's studio
The work and career of this artist are poorly documented. A student of Cormon, he exhibited irregularly at the Salon des Artistes français in 1899 and 1925, as well as at the Salon des indépendants. He benefited from a few purchases by the State between 1906 and 1911, painting mainly landscapes. There he revealed his predilection for rainy atmospheres and snowy views of the sites of Seine-et-Marne that were familiar to him. He also worked in Crozant for many years alongside Armand Guillaumin and Paul Madeline, with whom he was a friend and colleague. His views of the Creuse valleys are as popular as his snowy landscapes. The landscape we present was perhaps created around Grosrouvre in the Yvelines where René-Juste was based. This cherry tree which takes up the entire composition is naturally the subject, relegating the house to the background.
