Object description :

"Joseph Garibaldi (1863-1941) Rue De Medina"
The intimate atmosphere of an oriental street certainly made in Tunisia (according to Pierre Murat, the artist's expert).
Three enigmatic characters animate the scene but as always with this painter, although in the foreground, they fade away to let the viewer's eye dive into the street and linger on the work of perspectives, old stones and the light that illuminates the vaults in the background.
Made in oil on a wooden panel, the work is offered in a modern Delf frame that measures 35 cm by 29 cm and 21 cm by 16 cm for the panel alone.
It represents a street in Medina with effects of shadow and light, animated by three women, one of whom seems to be a street vendor.
In excellent condition, it is signed lower left.

Joseph Garibaldi exhibited at the Salon des Artistes from 1884 to 1914, where he received an honourable mention in 1887 and a second-class medal in 1897. These were mainly views of famous sites and monuments, of coastal ports: Cassis, where he painted regularly between 1884 and 1899, La Ciotat, where he was welcomed by Antoine Lumière, Bandol, Sanary and Toulon. But his speciality remained the Old Port of Marseille. Until 1905, he benefited from the patronage of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905) who, guided by the critic Paul Leroy, very favourable to Vollon's students, bought his paintings and donated them to provincial museums. He exhibited his landscapes at the Colonial Exhibition in Marseille in 1906 and obtained a travel grant for Tunisia in 1907. He was supported for the rest of his career by his friends from the Association of Marseille Artists (Étienne Martin, José Silbert and Édouard Crémieux), who were successively at the head of the association...
