"Curiosity: Petrified Limestone Napoleon Profile"
Interesting medallion with the profile of Napoleon I in petrified limestone, 19th century period. This technique known since the middle of the 18th century in Italy lies in the incrustation of limestone concretions on a mold under a natural fountain; very fashionable in the 19th century, it was the subject of holiday souvenirs on historical, geographical subjects, landscapes, portraits ... especially near thermal mineral springs rich in limestone. The Frenchman, Jean Serre, is interested with his father, Gilbert, in the phenomenon of petrification and invents an ingenious system of cascades to create these objects inspired by the work of Leonardo De Vegni, Italian inventor and architect. The quality of the bas-relief lies solely in the know-how of the master craftsman who handles the molds daily. The final result does not require any retouching or polishing. The manufacturing time lasts between 6 and 14 months depending on the complexity of the subject. This light ochre colored medallion remains in good condition, some very small defects quite acceptable. Beautiful patina. Delivery: €10 for mainland France.
