The Hussars of Liberty by Alexandre Bloch oil on panel signed lower right and dated 1896, format with the frame 41cm x36cm, frame to be restored. Alexandre Bloch, born in Paris on May 29, 1857 and died in the same city on November 11, 1919, is a French painter. Alexandre Bloch was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jules Bastien-Lepage. He began at the Salon of French Artists in 1880. He painted genre scenes, but also historical paintings of patriotic inspiration; he exhibited at the Salon paintings that illustrated in particular episodes of the Chouannerie and the Franco-German War of 1870. Alexandre Bloch was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1911 for his services as a reserve lieutenant in a territorial infantry regiment. At his death, he was a military painter accredited as painter of the Army Museum Works in public collections Chambéry, Museum of Fine Arts: Lieutenant Chabal taking a flag from the enemy in 1870, 1902.
