Pair of bronze Simha temple guardian lions, male and female. Nepal, early 20th century. In Nepalese tradition, these guardian lions occupy an important symbolic place, protecting the entrances to temples, monasteries or palaces, just like their counterparts in Southeast Asia. (Singha) Nepalese lions often have distinctive features influenced by Newar art, such as more elaborate patterns and a slightly different appearance from Thai or Burmese Singha.
