Object description :

"Military Ww2 Pocket Watch Helvetia, Gstp"
Military pocket watch from the Second World War supplied to the British armed forces, circa 1940.
Signed by Helvetia.

On 14 April 1892, the Swiss watch company Louis Brandt & Frere registered the name 'Helvetia' as one of the brands for their watches.
Two years later, in 1894, they also registered the name 'Omega' and applied it to a new range of high-quality movement anchor pocket watches that they had developed using advanced production technology.
So successful were the new Omega watches that the Brandt brothers decided to form a new company with Louis Brandt & Frere and move the production of some of their other watches to it in order to make room in their Biel factory to allow The increase in production of Omega watches.
On 5 August 1895, the new company 'Société d'Horlogerie La Générale' was incorporated in La Chaux-de-Fonds as a joint venture whose directors are Louis Paul Brandt and Edouard Boillat. In 1897, the company was registered as 'General Watch Co' and its head office was transferred to Biel.
In 1895, La Générale began producing better quality lever-movement watches, sold mainly under the brand name Helvetia.
The General ended the First World War in a strong position. In 1920, the company was valued at 1,000,000 Swiss francs, more than double its pre-war value.
The Second World War was another period of expansion for the company. They supplied pocket watches to the British and German armies, wristwatches to the Germans and, at the end of the war, to the US armies, as well as special chronometers for the Royal Navy. By the end of the 1940s, as at the end of the First World War, the value of the General Watch Co had doubled from a minimum of 350,000 Swiss francs in 1938 to 700,000 in 1948...

Pocket watch 19" supplied by Helvetia for the British army with luminous hands and white dial, a case in chromed metal.

Movement with anchor calibre 32A, 15 jewels.
The 32A calibre was the same as that supplied to the German army and it is of a very good quality and finished at an astonishingly high level for a mass-produced military watch.

The case of these watches is marked with an individual military serial number, sometimes preceded by a letter indicating the contract on which the watches were ordered (G and P in the case of Helvetia).

G.S.T.P. stands for General Services Trade Pattern. These G.S.T.P. watches were purchased by the British government for the armed forces.

Original white enamel dial signed Helvetia, with original hands. Very good condition.

Watch in working order.
Historical piece of the second war.

Diameter 52 mm.
