Jules Lellouche (1903-1963) oil on orientalist panel Sidi bou Said in Tunis Tunisia 24*35 cm (without frame) 38*49 cm (with frame) Condition (See photos) Born to parents who did not speak French and were foreign to Western culture, he grew up in the lively Jewish quarter of Monastir. After studying at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis, where the attraction of nature made him a promising portraitist and landscaper, he won a scholarship for a stay in Paris to complete his artistic training. He also fell in love with Venice to the point that Fernand Rouillon (de) called him "Lellouche the Venetian born in Monastir". For Juliette Darle, "one cannot be surprised that Venice retained him, nor Paris with its quays and bridges [...] But it is the light of Tunis above all that will have fascinated this modern impressionist"
