Our example, which is obviously a reproduction from after the Empire, is difficult to date, but the patina is beautiful, the blade is undeniably old, the wear on the leather of the grip and the oxidation on the dart give it a stamp of authenticity, which make it a sabre with the most beautiful decorative effect, at a modest price. The general appearance and the blade corresponding to the period make me suppose a 19th century manufacture, perhaps Napoleon III?
The blade has a wide hollow pan, with a counter-edge on the last 24 cm, it corresponds to the models of the Empire period. It does not have a punch or marking, but it is likely that it is a Solingen manufacture. Blade length = 83.5 cm, width at the ricasso = 3.2 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 6.8 mm
The mount is the regulation mount of this beautiful model: We have the scabbard with its engravings of spider webs surrounding the chiseled bracelets, with the crowned imperial eagle in its cartouche between the bracelets, with the bottom of the scabbard engraved with plant motifs, and the oxidized iron dart. The hilt also corresponds to the model; with the head of an ancient divinity on the cross guard at the level of the earpiece, the palmette quillon, and the long-tailed cap ending in a lion's head.
The grip is covered with slightly worn leather, and twisted brass filigree. There is nothing loose between the mount and the blade
. I will not dwell on the description any longer, the photos being telling all.
