Elegant and very rare pair of curules with swan necks in solid mahogany from the Empire period, whose architecture is directly inspired by Roman antiquity.
On an X-shaped base ending in small lion's paws, these stools feature rare rear uprights topped with two balls reminiscent of the curules of the Roman emperors.
The front uprights, as for them, take the form of swans.
The curvature of their necks became, from the 18th century, the image of sensuality.
Georges Jacob designed models of curule seats topped with spheres from 1792, notably for the Court of Cassation in Paris.
His sons, Jacob "Desmalter" and Georges II continued to use the essence of this architecture by adapting it to the Empire.
Very beautiful state of conservation. No reinforcement.
Covered with a Pierre Frey fabric in perfect condition.
Empire-Consulate period, 1800-1810.
Dimensions:
Height: 72 cm
Width: 58 cm
Depth: 43 cm
Historical note: The curule seat was one of the main attributes of power in Rome. Initially reserved for high magistrates, it became, under Augustus, one of the attributes of the emperor. From the 1st century AD, it became a luxury item reserved for an elite.
