Egyptomania Marble Clock, 19th Century

Large clock in the style of Egyptomania, in marble of different colors, decorated with stylized hieroglyphs, falcons and scarabs.

It is topped with a sphinx in patinated bronze.

Egyptomania is a very fashionable artistic movement in the 19th century, born from the fascination of Europeans for pharaonic Egyptian culture. Although already popular in Roman times, the art of the pharaohs was rediscovered with Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign and the first trips of artists and collectors. The architectural elements and decoration of the rediscovered temples intruded into European interiors in the form of objects but also furniture; the discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun and all its furniture will be a new source of inspiration for creators, enthusiasm for Egyptian civilization which continues today
