"Prometheus Sculpting Man, Athena Gives Him Life "
Amazing large drawing, made with a pen and enhanced with white gouache, for a fresco decoration of a palace (note the reserve for the location of a passage door) representing the myth of Prometheus according to the version of Apollodorus. In this version of the legend, Prometheus sculpts the man in clay, and it is Athena who gives him life and knowledge, thanks to the stolen fire. The central scene is surrounded by many divinities, we recognize the forge of Hephaestus on the right, Apollo on his chariot, Neptune and his trident, and a love scene in the foreground. The previous owners thought this drawing was from the neoclassical period, around 1800. However, conservative friends, whom I thank, consider this work rather towards the end of the 16th century, or the beginning of the 17th century. Indeed we are more in a mannerist spirit. It is a large sheet, curiously cut into small squares (for the realization of the fresco?) then certainly glued together. Any information on the possible location of the realization of this project is welcomed. It is presented in a simple natural wood stick with a pass that takes up the contours of the project. We will note stains and small lifting of the collages.
