Monoxyl sculpture dated 1925 on its niche. Artist: Asamitsu Moriyama. Condition: with the exception of a formerly restored thumb, perfect condition. The wood has oxidized and patinated. It is written in kanji on the box "to reflect". This inscription and the inclination of the woman's head suggest that she is looking at her reflection in the water. Artist: Asamitsu Moriyama (1897-1962) Trained in Tokyo with a master woodcarver. Participated in each Bunten from 1927. Specialized in Buddhist subjects and statues of historical figures. Exhibited in 1939 at the New York World's Fair. After the Second World War, his sculpture strives to convey the hope of a rebirth of Japan's national identity.
