"Renaissance Statue In Sculpted Marble, Tuscany, Late 16th / Early 17th Century."
Beautiful Renaissance fountain statue in sculpted white marble. Italian work from the Tuscany region, dating from the end of the 16th/beginning of the 17th century. The subject is interesting and rather rare; it depicts a young boy lifting his stockings to relieve himself. This theme perpetuates, at the end of the Renaissance, the tradition of popular imagery that is still medieval and deliberately irreverent. The face is well treated and very beautiful; the tunic and headgear are very much in the fashion of the time. The sculpture is in a beautiful condition despite old restorations, re-gluing at the ankles. The whole is solid and perfectly stable, of good dimensions and very decorative. This type of sculpture is typical of Italian productions from the period in the Florence region of Tuscany; they then adorned the gardens, ponds and fountains of beautiful noble villas. On the back of the statue, the original wrought iron attachment is still in place. The weight is significant, approximately 30 kg.
