The child has the good cheeks of a very small child. He lowers his eyes and sketches a smile. The head is slightly tilted, which favors the play of shadow and light. The curly hair of the little one is held by a headband.
The head is placed on a base of black and orange veined marble, in perfect condition. The marble itself, unpolished, is slightly yellowed in places, without this detracting from the whole.
The work is signed on the back.
Weight of the object: 5 kgs.
The artist
Gugliemo PUGI was born in Fiesole (Tuscany) in 1850. From 1870 and until his death, he lived in Florence where he ran a sculpture workshop with his two sons. Together, they worked mainly for the foreign market, including the United States. Pugi's works were also exhibited in New York in 1901 and at the Universal Exhibition in Saint-Louis, Missouri, in 1904.
Guglielmo Pugi's work, typical of Art Nouveau, is characterized by direct carving on alabaster and Carrara marble (mainly white or veined).
