The artist
Louis-René Boulanger was born in Paris in 1860. His father was a portrait painter and knew the artists of the time (Hugo, Balzac, Dumas, etc.). But he died when little Louis was only 7 years old. His mother remarried a painter, and her son studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He settled in Ain, in Bourg-en-Bresse, in 1884. He then stayed several years in Belley, in the same region. Returning to Bourg-en-Bresse, he became curator of the Fine Arts Museum of this city. Louis-René Boulanger decorated many public and private buildings in Bourg and Belley. He regularly exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in Paris and at the Salon des artistes de Lyon, where he received a first class medal in 1912.
The Brou museum (Ain) holds some of his paintings. His works have been sold at public auctions on numerous occasions, in France and in Europe.
