Son of Etienne Thivet (1826-1893), painter from Beaune, Antoine-Auguste entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1876, where he studied with Gérôme and Aimé Millet. He moved from orientalism to landscape, from scenes of Parisian life to still lifes, including portraits. From 1877, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français, receiving an honorable mention in 1899. His reputation is based above all on his painting of nudes. As a painter of women, everything is a pretext for their representation in the simplest form, whether they are nymphs, divinities, witches or peasants.
