Object description :

"Late 19th Century Hand-painted, Ceramic Moroccan Khattat Calligraphy Inkwell"
Moroccan calligraphy, famous for its finesse and beauty, brings words to life. The swirling characters flit across the pages. The subtle movements, symmetry, and flowing rhythm of the characters mesmerize and elevate the reader to a contemplative state. It is a divine dance of letters.
This late 19th Century inkwell, designed to hold either 5 different inks for the qalam (or reed stylus) or 4 inks with a 5th well for a candle in the center, is hand-painted in the traditional Moroccan blues, yellows, whites, and reddish browns. The waves and curves of the painted shapes inspire the calligrapher to produce each stroke with purpose and elegance. The ceramic glaze provides luster, allowing the colors to present themselves truly.
The shape is that of a mosque with the traditional dome serving as a lid. 8 windows, two on each wall, afford the writer a view inside the religious space that holds the font of his words. The intent of the design is to blend the spiritual, the artistic, the symmetry of structure, the flows of nature, and the words of the writer into one.
A fine memento for anyone who seeks the inspiration to write with purpose.
