Solomon Islands, mid-20th century, superb and very large wooden sculpture inlaid with mother-of-pearl representing a crocodile, symbolizing immortality. It carries a fish in its mouth. The back is decorated with a turtle signifying the wisdom of the war chief. The tail is decorated with a coiled snake to celebrate the appearance of life on earth. This type of sculpture has a strong and refined aesthetic at the same time. Due to its large size and the quality of its attributes, it was intended for a high-ranking family or was found in a common house of the inhabitants of the same village.
