Superb Mughal Miniature Painted on Ivory - Portrait of an Indian Dignitary This magnificent miniature, dating from the 19th century, illustrates with exceptional refinement the Mughal art, famous for its finesse and decorative richness. Painted on an ivory plaque, it depicts an Indian pasha accompanied by his princess, an emblematic representation of imperial India. • Period: 19th century, Mughal style. • Technique: Painting on ivory. • Subject: • On the left, an Indian princess dressed in a richly decorated sari, wearing traditional jewelry and a delicately painted veil. Her gentle expression and posture reveal grace and dignity. • On the right, an Indian dignitary, probably a pasha or nobleman, in sumptuous clothing, decorated with intricate patterns. His ornate turban and jewelry testify to his high rank. • In the center and in the upper and lower cartouches, medallions representing secondary characters and decorative motifs, adding depth and a narrative aspect to the composition. • Frame: • The frame, carved from a dense exotic wood (probably padauk), is decorated with inlaid floral motifs, typical of Mughal decorative arts.
