Netsuke – carved wood, depicting a rat climbing on a dried salmon head, (shiozake), a classic Japanese New Year's dish (Shogatsu). The fish is carved and presented with its mouth open, revealing the teeth inside, and the rat sits upright and prepares to feast on its spoils. Reverse decorated with a Himotoshi. The eyes are inlaid with brown horn. Edo period (1615-1868) Japan, 19th century.
