"Rare Japanese-style Stoneware Tea Service By Léon Jouhaud In Limoges Circa 1930. Soubourou, Jourdain"
Rare Japanese-inspired stoneware tea set by Léon Jouhaud in Limoges circa 1930/1940, some pieces signed "model by L.Jouhaud, Sylex stoneware" Height of teapot and coffee pot 12.5 and 8.5cm, milk jug 7.5cm saucer diameters 13 and 14.5cm This is therefore a rare stoneware tea and coffee set by Léon Jouhaud, shapes very much inspired by Japan, the decoration is very modernist and above all very typical of Léon Jouhaud with a part made of geometric circles in shades of blue and white on a brown/beige background, another part of the service is decorated with flames in the same tones. The service consists of 13 pieces with a teapot, a coffee pot, 2 milk jugs, 4 coffee cups with their saucers, 3 tea cups with their saucers and two bowls or cups. Service in very good condition for its age, I just note 3 cracks on 3 cups and a handle of the teapot glued back together, that's all. I no longer present Léon Jouhaud, famous painter, writer, ceramist and enameler Limoges, therefore son-in-law and student of Charles Bichet, having also rubbed shoulders with many painters of the Crozant school, such as Guillaumin, Detroy, Alluaud or Paul Thomas another great friend of the painter, he will even take care of repatriating the works of the latter when he died in Marseille in 1910; he exhibited at Rouard in Paris, Dalpayrat in Limoges etc... Jouhaud will produce many ceramics, in porcelain or stoneware, artistic or utilitarian pieces, he will collaborate with several regional manufacturers, such as Camille Tharaud, GDA porcelains, Sylex stoneware and will even fire unique ceramics in his enamel kilns. There are several books on his work.
