Émile Peynot is a French sculptor and medallist born on November 22, 1850 in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne and died on December 13, 1932 in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. Winner of the Prix de Rome in sculpture in 1880, some of his monumental works are preserved in Argentina. Biography: Émile Edmond Peynot was born on November 22, 1850 in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne. His parents were of modest origins, his father a mason died in 1862. He was apprenticed to a baker. Mr. Duflot, the director of the municipal school of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, had noticed Émile Peynot's taste for the fine arts and he decided to train him in drawing himself and gave him the material means to continue his studies. In 1867, Peynot entered the studio of Pierre Robinet in Paris, where he trained for three years. On March 28, 1870, he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and joined the sculpture section in the studio of François Jouffroy. In 1871, he was awarded the School's Grand Medal. His results and the praise of his teachers allowed him to obtain a grant from the Yonne department in 1872 and 1873. In 1873, he made his debut at the Salon des artistes français with a Buste de femme and in 1880, he won the first grand prix de Rome; some of his monumental works were preserved in Argentina. He became a professor at the École des beaux-arts in Paris and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He was elected a member of the Société académique du Touquet-Paris-Plage on 13 August 1921; he resigned in August 1927. He died in Paris on 13 December 1932. Awards: Émile Peynot was awarded numerous medals at the Salon des artistes français and won a gold medal at the 1889 and 1900 Universal Exhibitions in Paris. Distinctions: Émile Peynot was appointed Commander of the Dragon of Annam in 1889 at the inauguration of the Monument to Paul Bert.
