Carved Wood Sculpture, 18th Century

- Sculpture of a Mater Dolorosa in polychrome carved wood, work from the 18th century

- The sculpture represents a woman with pale skin, dressed in a red dress, a yellowish veil and a dark coat. Her arms, held forward, the palms of her hands open towards the sky, one of her knees bending; her expression is that of pain, of imploration. The woman's gaze directed upwards, her eyebrows lowered, her mouth half-open, suggest her affliction and the dejection of her spirit.

- In the service of expressiveness, the author of this work knew, with clarity and finesse, how to "sculpt the movements of the soul" of this Mater Dolorosa, making palpable the intense pain that seizes her at this precise moment. The polychromy also serves the transcription of her affects and emotions; the saturated colors of her outfit emphasize her dull complexion, the drawn iris of her eyes, thanks to a change of color, emphasizes the pain expressed in her gaze. Note the finesse of the sculpture which is also distinguished in the treatment of the drapes.
