"Young Venetian woman with a pitcher"

Oil on cardboard,
Signed lower left,

Beautiful bright work by the Czech painter Joseph Syrovy which represents a young woman holding a pitcher of water in Venice. In the background, we can see the bell tower of St. Mark's Square.
The artist plays with a palette of bright colors, on the play of contrast and light to bring his painting to life.
The detail in particular of the young woman's face and her clothes are done to perfection.

A student of Václav Brožík and Vojtěch Hynais at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Josef Syrovy moved to Venice, Italy, at the age of 20, then to Paris in 1911. In Venice he was particularly interested in the local life of its inhabitants and in France in the landscape of Brittany and Itteville in Île-de-France, which reminded him of his native village.
Josef Syrovy exhibited for the first time in Prague in 1928. His work was critically acclaimed in France.
In 1939 he returned to Prague and concentrated his artistic work on the urban landscape of the Czech capital.
In 1940 he exhibited 23 paintings and 13 watercolours at the Mazač Gallery, after 1945 he participated in the exhibition "The Nation and its Artists". Josef Syrouvy is among others the author of the altarpiece of the church of St. Peter Audrey and the paintings of St. Avojtěch in the chapel there.

Dimensions: 27 x 22 cm without frame and 28 x 23.5 cm with its original wooden frame.

Our work can form a pendant with the other painting currently for sale: "Young merchants in Venice".
