An American in Paris Like many American painters of his generation, Francis Morton-Johnson (1878-1931) left his native Massachusetts to complete his artistic training in Paris. There he joined the Académie Julian, where he followed the teaching of Jean-Paul Laurens. Debuting at the Salon d'Automne in 1907, he joined the Salon des Indépendants the following year, which earned him the acquisition of a still life by the State.
