After studying at the Conservatoire, she made her debut at the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques in an Offenbach operetta and then became a star overnight when she created the role of Serpolette in Les Cloches de Corneville, whose costume she wears in this print. Sarah Bernhardt, Gustave Courbet, Charles Baudelaire, Eugène Delacroix and fashionable actresses… They all posed in front of Nadar's lens! Real name Félix Tournachon (1820–1910), Nadar is undoubtedly the photographer of 19th-century celebrities. This brilliant visionary and experimenter marked the history of the image by becoming the first aerial photographer, but also the artist of the sensitive photographic portrait, at a time of the quasi-industrial development of this new medium.
