Object description :

"Bronze Oil Lamp, Peacock, Beloved Bird, South India Circa 1900"
Antique cast bronze pendant, oil lamp in the shape of the graceful mythical figure of a peacock, a bird worshipped in India.
Hanging chain decorated with three peacocks, four rings and a hook in the shape of a cat's head.
The body of the bird functions as an oil reservoir while the beak at the base of the bird's body serves as a place to insert the wick of the lamp.
This lamp was handcrafted using the lost wax metal casting process, according to traditional customs and traditions, thousands of years old by skilled Indian craftsmen.
Still an integral part of the prayer room near the altar, the presence of these lamps was an important aspect of the ritual worship offered to a deity. South India circa 1900.
The bird is associated with Mahâmâyûrî, the spiritual mother of the Buddha, seated on a base carried by a peacock.
In Central Asia, the iconography of the peacock has undergone the combined influence of Buddhism and archaic China: the peacock is the symbol of the earthly and celestial royalty of the Buddha.
The Indian peacock, Pavo cristatus is the national bird of India.
4,000 years ago in India, the peacock was already a symbol of immortality and fertility.
