"Yuri Yakovlevich Lehman Russia 1834-1901, The Lady With Pearl Earrings"
Yuri Yakovlevich Lehman Russia 1834-1901, Lady with Pearls Egor Yakovlev Leman (1834-1901) - Russian painter. He painted mainly portraits, to a lesser extent genre compositions and landscapes. Born on February 21 (March 5, 1834[3]) in the town of Elatma, Tambov Governorate, into a noble family. Until 1849 he studied at the Alexandria Institute for Orphans in Moscow, then worked as a clerk in the office of the Senate Department of the Government in Moscow. In the years 1850-1863 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts at the expense of the Moscow Orphanage. In 1862 he received a small gold medal for the painting "The Groom's Farewell". While studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts he completed commissions for portraits in watercolor from nature. In 1863 he graduated from the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts with the title of first-class artist, awarded for 5 watercolor portraits. (Left, "Portrait of the artist's wife, Louise") In the 1860s, Leman was engaged in retouching and colorizing photographic portraits for the photographic studios of A. I. Denyer and S. L. Levitsky. From 1866 he lived mainly in Paris, where for the first three years he worked as a retoucher and painted watercolor portraits from photographs. From the late 1870s he became famous for his portraits of women from Parisian high society. In the second half of the 1870s he worked in England for several months, where he made a number of commissioned watercolor portraits. In 1881 he went to Italy. Yuri Yakovlev Leman was a member of the ORH since 1877, a member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions since 1881. Yuri Yakovlev was better known in France than in Russia. The opinion of the Russian critic V. V. Stasov on one of Yu Ya Leman's works at the Wanderers exhibition: "A magnificent sketch or portrait was sent from Paris by a Russian artist whom the French have already brilliantly tested at several of their exhibitions: Mr. Leman. Last summer, at the world exhibition in our department, there were two portraits, both feminine and charming, but the one that has now been sent to St. Petersburg and is called Lady in a Costume from a Catalogue, surpasses them all in the grace of its pose and smiling face, and in the perfect, very elegant (but without sugarcoating or exaggeration) painting of the face, neck, chest, bare shoulders and pink satin on the dress and the old hat with wide curved brims. It is impossible not to testify that all the participants in the traveling exhibitions were sincerely delighted by the sudden, totally unexpected, unforeseen success of their little-known colleague and discovered before their eyes his elegant French technique."
