Traditional Kachinam dolls, for the Pueblo Native American peoples (notably the Hopi, Zuni, Tewa Village, Acoma Pueblo and Laguna Pueblo), serve as educational tools offered to children after ritual ceremonies. Among the Hopi, boys begin their initiation into the katchina cult, dedicated to the ancestors, from the age of six. The Kachinam dolls, both decorative and symbolic, come to life during the traditional dances that accompany the annual festivities in honor of rain. These figurines represent masked katchina dancers, embodying a variety of spirits, and their colors are associated with the cardinal directions.
