Large pastel representing a character (composer???) executed by Henry de Groux; "Master of excess", de Groux exhibited his first works in 1885 with the Essor group in Brussels and was then elected to the Groupe des XX, with which he participated in three annual exhibitions (1887-1889) and was threatened with exclusion in 1890 for refusing to exhibit his works near those of ... Van Gogh! He then settled in Paris where he produced most of his work and rubbed shoulders with other artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Gauguin, Ensor and Huysmans. He also frequented many writers, including Mallarmé, Verlaine and Zola; for whom he took part in the Dreyfus affair and ensured his protection against the hostile crowd at the exit from the court. Henry de Groux reveals himself through emblematic figures such as Christ, Dante, Wagner and Napoleon; His pastels, often large in size, with their bright and spirited colours, contribute to his reputation as a painter of excess.
