The present panel once likely adorned a Flemish cabinet piece. It is finely and confidently painted, traditionally similar works were often attributed to Jasper van der Lanen and the artist of the present painting can be firmly situated in the milieu of the Flemish landscape painters of the first half of the 17th century. It serves as a reminder of the vast and idilic countryside landscapes which could be observed in this significant era and is an invitation to dream about both these times and the everlasting beauty of nature.
A pair of two smaller paintings (13.8 by 17.5cms), which may be related to the present painting, were offered as works by Van Lanen on March 30th 2007 as lot 12 (Piasa, France) and again on September 22nd 2023 as lot 3049 (Koller, Switzerland).
