The osculatory, from the Latin osculum (the kiss), more commonly called the kiss of peace, is an object used optionally in the Catholic liturgy.
The priest kisses it, then the deacon, finally the subdeacon who will present it to the faithful according to liturgical modalities that vary depending on the place, the type of celebration and the customs. This instrument, which appeared in the Middle Ages, thus allows the faithful to transmit the kiss of peace without direct physical contact - sometimes ambiguous - and by recalling the religious meaning of the gesture accomplished. The instrument of peace is presented to the priest by the server or the deacon.
