"Alphonse Chanteau : “the Adige In Verona 1901”"
Alphonse Chanteau (1874-1958): "L'Adige à Vérone", oil on panel 33 X 23.5 cm, mounted in a carved and gilded wooden frame 41 X 34 cm. Located and dated 1901 on the back. Panel stiffened by two crossbars, a very small lack of wood on the left side at the bottom (hidden by the rebate) and small accidents to the frame. I have always liked paintings in cavalier perspective, especially when they show roofs, which can seem strange as I am prone to vertigo! Here, we have a view of the sunny right bank with the Adige spanned by the famous oculus bridge, from a high point on the left bank, leaving the roofs in shadow. The Artist and his twin brother Gabriel were students of Besnard and Merson at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, but Alphonse turned away from easel painting for the decoration of Odetta's ceramics, which we can regret given the quality of his paintings...
