"Gouache On Paper Representing A Stylized Christ"
Gouache on paper mounted on canvas signed lower left. Latapie's work developed at the limits of cubism; the simplification of forms brought him closer to abstraction in the 1950s. A student of Jean-Paul Laurens, of the Académie Julian and then in 1911 of the Académie Ranson, he became a professor at the latter in 1920 and presented his first exhibitions in 1922. In 1923, he formed the Association des Castors de Montsouris with Georges Braque, Bissière and Ozenfant, in order to build original houses with a cubic structure. In 1927, he decorated one of the pillars of the famous brasserie La Coupole.
