"Painted Ivory Box Miniatures Animated Landscapes Travel Early 19th Century"
This pretty ivory box is painted on all sides. The lid depicts an astonishing scene of two ladies driving a semi-covered three-horse carriage with luggage on the roof, leaving a coaching inn in a mountainous and wooded landscape. All around the box is a painted decoration of flower medallions connecting between the lid and the bottom and of rose scatterings on a Nattier blue background. The bottom is also painted with a lake landscape animated by a boatman on the edge of the bank. Two ladies of high society, traveling without a coachman, that is unusual! We wonder who is in the closed part of the carriage? The notion of a long journey is evoked by the luggage stowed on the roof of the carriage. The costume of the drivers does not help to specify the date of creation of the object: the style of the decoration is fully 18th century when the dresses and hats seem 19th century.
The varnish has been redone so that this box regains its original colors.
Excellent condition, only two small color losses at the edge of the wall. A charming mysterious object that we place at the very beginning of the 19th century around 1820!
