"Terracotta Bust Of The “laughing Neapolitan” Signed Carpeaux."
Bust Le Rieur Napolitain signed Carpeux on a square pedestal. It bears his foundry stamp Susse Frère (between 1920 and 1939) and his signature. This bust is in good condition, no breakage and has traces of wear patina (see photos). This Laughing Child is an adaptation of the young fisherman with the shell. Its dimensions are: Height: 49cm. Width: 35 cm. Pedestal: 15 cm. The Young Fisherman with the Shell is one of the first works of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The model was created in 1857 during the sculptor's stay at the Villa Medici in Rome. He understood that his art must free itself from the weight of academicism and the classical canons acquired during his training. According to him, the artist must confront reality and gain in realism and spontaneity. Carpeaux then remembers a young fisherman he was able to observe on a Neapolitan beach. The child's only attribute is a bonnet on his head, a fishing net is placed on his left thigh. Caught in the moment, he holds an empty shell to his left ear with both hands. Carpeaux pays a vibrant homage here to his master François Rude and his Young Neapolitan Fisherman Playing with a Turtle.
