Object description :

"Equestrian Statue Of Marcus Aurelius On Marble Base Gran Tour XIX Century"
The original 2nd-century statue of Marcus Aurelius, from the Lateran, was placed in the Piazza del Campidoglio by Michelangelo and is now in the Capitoline Museums in Rome.
The emperor is bareheaded, dressed in a tunic and a heavy commander's cloak, called a paludamentum, which is fastened on the right shoulder with a disc pin. On his feet he does not wear patrician shoes, but light military sandals. His right hand is in the gesture of adlocutio, typical of commanders speaking to their soldiers. His left hand, which holds the reins, wears the senator's gold ring, used for sealing.
