- Rock crystal is a colorless and gem variety of quartz. Composed of silicon and oxygen, it contains only tiny traces of other chemical elements. It crystallizes from a few kilometers deep, at temperatures of around 250 to 850¨C. Quartz most often presents, as is the case here, apparently hexagonal prisms. The word "crystal" comes from the ancient Greek crystallos which means "ice"; the Ancients thought that rock crystal was formed at low temperature by irreversible freezing of water.
