Magnificent oil on canvas by Louis Clesse, Belgian School (1889 -1961). Clesse was a Belgian figurative painter, post-impressionist, watercolourist and etcher. He was known for his landscapes and harbour scenes. Clesse's style is a successful combination of realism and impressionism, strongly influenced by Emile Claus, Franz Courtens and Isidore Verheyden. It is an art that shows a great love for the land, with attention to light, colour, atmosphere, all translated into oil with remarkable skill and sense of design. Clesse systematically worked en plein air, even on relatively large formats, but he also produced many works in the studio, usually reworks of sketches made en plein air.
