"The Young Writer At His Desk By Edward Henry Corbould"
Remarkable small oil study on wood, certainly made for a large painting, representing a young writer seeking inspiration at his work table. Edward Henry Corbould (1815-1905) is an important artist in the English artistic landscape of the 19th century. Born into a family of painters for several generations, he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1834, and won gold medals for his work. A history painter, he was also an excellent watercolourist. He entered the royal collections through the personal purchases of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was appointed drawing teacher to the royal children. His long career took him through the Romantic era and his historical works were emblematic of the taste for the 17th century of the time. Our painting, a study (18 cm x 22 cm), brilliantly shows the talent of this artist, who makes the painting so lively and luminous with a few juices thrown quickly . It is the mark of a consummate craft. The painting is presented in a simple patinated oak key frame, which ideally pastiches the 17th century. The painting is monogrammed and the name is specified on the back later. Excellent original condition.
