Object description :

"Silvered Bronze Sculpture "cupid" By Louis Kley, 19th Century Marble Base"
Magnificent chased and silvered bronze representing Cupid kneeling and draped, signed L. KLEY. This sculpture of an imposing size, made for the Salon of 1877, is typical of the artist's style, known for his sentimental and detailed representations. Cupid, with outstretched wings, implores love with a supplicating gesture. His quiver of arrows, decorated with the date "16 January 1879", and the date of the Salon of 1877, rests elegantly on a sumptuous rockery. This personalization suggests that the sculpture was commissioned by an eminent personage, perhaps a French senator. The round base, in red Royale marble, is richly molded and gives the whole a great elegance. The details are finely chiseled, revealing Kley's talent for capturing the expression and liveliness of his subjects. Cupid's face, with its delicate features and undulating hair, is particularly striking. This work, produced on a monumental scale to represent Kley's studio, is a testament to the artist's fame on the Parisian scene at the end of the 19th century. Louis Kley, born in 1833 and died in 1911, is renowned for his studio bronzes, often smaller in size, representing animals, children and scenes of daily life. This sculpture, by its artistic quality and its history, constitutes an exceptional piece for any collector of 19th century French art.
