"Reliquary “ex Ossibus” – Monstrance – Relic Holder - Reliqaure De Saint Roch - France"
Late 19th Century – France This superb relic holder in the form of a monstrance is a work of religious art combining elegance and spirituality. Finely crafted in gilded brass, it highlights two relics of Saint Roch: ex indumentis (from his garment) and ex ossibus (from his bones), presented in a central cavity decorated with delicate filigree and protected by domed glass. Characteristics: • Relics: • The relics are fixed on a dark fabric glued to the bottom of the monstrance. • They are surrounded by a delicately arranged silver thread. • The reliquary itself is also glued. Although these relics have no official seal or threads, they remain elements of great spiritual and decorative value. It is possible that this set is a convent work, made for internal or devotional use. • Use: Liturgical or devotional object, intended for the veneration and conservation of sacred relics. Historical Context: Devotion to Saint Roch intensified from the Middle Ages onwards, particularly during times of epidemics. This type of relic holder was used to display the saint's relics, allowing the faithful to pray for his protection and intercession. The neo-Gothic aesthetic of this object reflects the late 19th century craze for medieval forms, visible both in religious objects and in architecture. Condition: Very good overall condition, with some light traces of use on the brass, consistent with its age. (No official stamp or threads.)
