A Shachihoko (鯱・鯱鉾) –
or simply Shachi (鯱) –
is a sea monster from Japanese folklore with the head of a dragon or a tiger-lion and the body of a carp[1] entirely covered in black or gray scales.[2] According to the tale, Shachihoko lives in the cold northern ocean.
Its large fins and tail always point towards the sky, and its dorsal fins have many sharp points.
It can swallow a huge amount of water and retain it in its belly, as well as summon clouds and control rain.[3] Although they are thought to come from the sea, they are often built high up on the roof, upside down.
