Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652) was a prominent Spanish Baroque painter known for his powerful and often dramatic interpretations of religious, mythological, and historical subjects. Born in Játiva, Spain, Ribera moved to Italy at a young age, where he lived for most of his career, particularly in Naples, which was under Spanish rule at the time. Influenced by Caravaggio's realism and chiaroscuro techniques, Ribera became renowned for his mastery of light and shadow, as well as his intense, emotional depictions of the human form.
His work often featured stark, highly detailed portrayals of saints, martyrs, and mythological figures, conveying intense psychological and physical suffering. Ribera was also known for his remarkable ability to depict texture, particularly in the rendering of flesh, as seen in his famous "Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew." His later works reflected a more somber and mature style, contributing to the evolution of Baroque art in Spain.
Ribera was highly regarded in Naples, where he enjoyed both critical acclaim and financial success, working for the Spanish aristocracy, the church, and local collectors. His influence extended throughout Europe, and his legacy as one of the foremost painters of the Spanish Baroque era endures today.
